In the run-up to national elections, international experts supporting democracy and election initiatives have forced to leave the country due to their work with national civil society organizations engaged in Uganda’s elections.

In October 2020, the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) Bureau indefinitely suspended the operations of an international non-profit, Give Directly (GD). GD was running a programme that involved 57 Billion Uganda Shillings providing assistance to Ugandans most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Give Directly was operating a cash transfer programme which the NGO Bureau did not authorize.

On 29 October 2020, the NGO Bureau halted the operations of NGO, the National Elections Watch Uganda (New-U), on the basis that it is an illegal entity not registered or incorporated.

September 2020 - Nine HRDs, civil society activists and freelance journalists arrested for their legitimate work to preserve the Bugoma Forest.

On 7 September 2020, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) issued a public notice reminding online communication and broadcasters including bloggers, online television, radio and newspaper of their obligations to seek authorization from the UCC before providing such services to the public by 5 October 2020.
